from individual learning to a team wide coaching culture at Amazon

Read this Become Success Story of how one person's passion for coaching grew into a shared team practice that now impacts relationships and leadership at Amazon.

It All Started With One Person

Become’s partnership with Amazon unfolded naturally through Laura’s personal journey. As a Senior Manager in Leadership Development at Amazon, Laura has a deep passion for coaching and developmental work. While her focus was helping others grow in their leadership roles, she recognised an important truth: those who develop others must also continuously develop themselves.

This realisation led to an intentional shift in her professional growth path. Laura approached Become to enroll in the Level 1 Diploma in Integrative Coaching, driven by a desire to master her coaching abilities and broaden her skillset. For her, this wasn’t just about adding another credential. It was about deepening her expertise in an area she had always been passionate about, allowing her to have more meaningful conversations and develop a more reflective approach to management.

The journey became even more enriching when her manager, Amanda King, also a Senior Manager at Amazon, joined her on the program. Together, they began exploring ways to weave coaching principles into their daily work. What started as small adjustments: refined conversation techniques, more thoughtful questioning, and creative problem-solving approaches, soon evolved into a more comprehensive transformation of how they supported their teams’ growth and development.

"Looking back at my coaching journey, it's been such a valuable experience. While I've always believed in coaching as part of my leadership approach, having the space to develop these skills properly has made all the difference. The Become Coaching team and course have been incredible - thank you for guiding me through this journey and creating such a supportive learning environment. It was incredibly reassuring to discover that my natural instincts were actually on track, and having the chance to practice alongside others who share this passion has helped me grow so much."

A Ripple Effect Across The Team

What followed was not entirely planned, but significant. As Laura and Amanda applied their coaching training, they demonstrated the power of intentional investment in personal development, particularly for those who typically focus on developing others. Team conversations became more meaningful, meetings gained greater purpose, and the team culture evolved into one of deeper reflection and growth.

They observed how coaching skills enhanced not just individual interactions, but the entire dynamic of how they worked together and supported others. It became clear that to be truly effective in developing leaders across Amazon, they needed to continually develop themselves.

This led to both Laura and Amanda continuing their coaching certification through the Level 2 Advanced Diploma in Integrative Coaching. In turn, one by one, more team members chose to embark on their own coaching development journey with Become. Each brought their unique perspective and goals, creating a rich foundation of approaches to leadership development. Some team members focused on enhancing their deliberate use of coaching questions, others on deepening their ability to navigate complex conversations, but all shared the common thread of wanting to elevate their impact.

The result? A gradual meaningful shift. Coaching was no longer something one person did; it was becoming part of how the whole team worked, not only with each other, but also across the wider organisation.

Supporting Wider Initiatives & Organisational Impact

Coaching gave people a framework to pause, listen more deeply, and support others without jumping to solutions. It helped individuals create space for reflective thinking, both for themselves and the stakeholders they work with. It also provided the team useful tools for giving feedback, navigating tricky conversations, and supporting team development in a more collaborative, supportive way.

As the team began to integrate coaching into their day-to-day work, other parts of the business started to take notice. Leaders began asking questions about the approach: what coaching was, how it worked, and how it might support them in their own leadership roles. This led to more conversations, more collaboration and a wider organisational shift.

"I've learned to be more thoughtful about how and when I use coaching, and it's reminded me why I fell in love with this approach in the first place. What started as personal development has turned into something bigger - seeing the impact firsthand made me realize how much my whole team could benefit from these skills. I'm grateful for how much this learning journey has expanded my perspective on what's possible."

What's Next?

What started as one person’s development journey has now opened up a broader conversation about how coaching can support culture change. The team is now exploring ways they can shape an internal Coaching Skills for Leaders programme, aiming to share their learning and extend its reach across the wider organisation.

What began as a single ICF Coach Training Certification has evolved into a team shift with real organisational impact and change.
